The Defend Your Thinking Lab™ ELA Critical Thinking Activity | Grades 6–12

Can your students give an answer - but struggle to explain why their answer should be trusted?

The Defend Your Thinking Lab™ is an evidence-based ELA critical thinking activity that teaches students to build a defensible claim, evaluate and rank evidence, explain the connection between evidence and a claim, respond to a reasonable counterclaim, and defend their reasoning.

Instead of simply asking students to “use evidence,” this no-tech activity asks students to think like an evidence auditor:

Which evidence is strongest?

Why is it stronger?

How does the evidence actually support the claim?

What does the evidence NOT prove?

What would a reasonable reader say in response?

Can you defend your position after the challenge?

MAKE STUDENT THINKING VISIBLE

Students practice:

✓ Building precise, defensible claims

✓ Comparing evidence for strength and relevance

✓ Distinguishing useful evidence from merely related details

✓ Explaining the reasoning bridge between evidence and a claim

✓ Recognizing limitations in evidence

✓ Developing reasonable counterclaims

✓ Responding to challenges without abandoning sound reasoning

✓ Constructing claim-evidence-reasoning defenses

✓ Teaching the strategy to another learner

✓ Reflecting on their own reasoning

✓ Transferring the strategy to a new context

THE LAB WORKFLOW

CHOOSE THE CLAIM → RANK THE EVIDENCE → PROVE THE CONNECTION → CHALLENGE THE CLAIM → DEFEND YOUR THINKING → TEACH IT → REFLECT

Students do more than collect evidence.

They learn how to determine whether evidence is actually strong enough to support a claim.

COMMON CORE ALIGNMENT

The Grade 7 model activity is aligned to grade 7 Common Core ELA/Literacy standards but the lab activities align to the corresponding standards in grades 6-12:

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.7.1 - Cite several pieces of textual evidence to support analysis and inferences.

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.7.8 - Trace and evaluate an argument and specific claims, assessing whether reasoning is sound and evidence is relevant and sufficient.

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.7.1 - Write arguments to support claims with clear reasons and relevant evidence.

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.7.9 - Draw evidence from literary or informational texts to support analysis, reflection, and research.

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.SL.7.1 - Engage effectively in collaborative discussions with diverse partners.

The framework is adaptable across Grades 6–12 with grade-appropriate standards selected for the specific text, course, and instructional target.

The Common Core ELA standards explicitly expect students to develop and retain grade-level skills across Grades 6–12, with increasingly sophisticated applications of evidence, reasoning, argument, and discussion.

NO STUDENT TECHNOLOGY REQUIRED

AI is for the teacher. Thinking is for the student.

Teacher-facing AI tools are included to help educators quickly customize the experience around the skills, texts, topics, and learner needs they are already teaching.

Students do NOT need AI or technology to complete the activity.

WHY THIS IS DIFFERENT

This is not another worksheet that says:

“Find two pieces of evidence.”

Students must decide:

Which evidence is strongest?

Then:

Why?

Then:

How does it support the claim?

Then:

What could a reasonable reader challenge?

Then:

Can you defend your thinking?

THE GOAL

Don't just ask students for an answer.

Ask them to prove why their answer deserves to be trusted.

AI for the teacher. Thinking for the student.

THE COMPLETE THINKING EVIDENCE CYCLE™

Predict → Analyze → Challenge → Defend → Teach → Transfer → Reflect

AI for the teacher. Thinking for the student.

Build students who can do more than answer.

Help them explain. Defend. Teach. Transfer.

Coming Together as One System:

The Almost-Right Answer Lab™

Evaluate tempting answers.

The Thinking Error Lab™

Diagnose and repair flawed reasoning.

Defend Your Thinking Lab™

Build evidence-based arguments.

You Are the Teacher Lab™

Demonstrate understanding by teaching it.

The Transfer Challenge Lab™

Apply learning in a new context.
