The Almost-Right Answer Lab™ ELA Critical Thinking Activity | Grades 6–12

Are your students choosing an answer that sounds right—but cannot explain why it is actually the best answer?

The Almost-Right Answer Lab™ is an evidence-based ELA critical thinking activity designed to move students beyond simply finding an answer. Instead, students analyze competing responses, identify tempting but flawed reasoning, use textual evidence, defend their thinking, teach the skill to someone else, and reflect on how their thinking changed.

THE BIG IDEA

Students don't just need to know what the answer is.

They need to understand:

Why is it correct?

Why is another answer tempting?

What evidence supports the strongest response?

Where does the weaker reasoning break down?

Can I explain the difference to someone else?

This no-tech student activity is part of The Thinking Evidence Cycle™, a repeatable framework designed to make student thinking visible.

BONUS: Teacher AI Toolkit

Use teacher-facing AI prompts to quickly create additional versions of the lab around the skills, texts, and topics you are already teaching.

Important: Students do not need to use AI or technology to complete the activities. The AI tools are designed for the teacher, not the student.

COMMON CORE ALIGNMENT

The Grade 7 model activity is aligned to grade 7 Common Core ELA/Literacy standards but the lab activities align to the corresponding standards in grades 6-12:

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.7.1 — Cite several pieces of textual evidence to support analysis of what a text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text.

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.7.8 — Trace and evaluate the argument and specific claims in a text, assessing whether the reasoning is sound and the evidence is relevant and sufficient.

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.7.1 — Write arguments to support claims with clear reasons and relevant evidence.

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.SL.7.1 — Engage effectively in a range of collaborative discussions with diverse partners on grade 7 topics, texts, and issues.

The resource is structured so teachers can adapt the same thinking framework to grade-level standards across Grades 6–12. Grade-specific standards should be selected based on the text, skill, and course in which the lab is used.

WHY TEACHERS WILL LOVE IT

This is not another “answer the questions” worksheet.

It asks students to think about answers, challenge answers, defend answers, explain answers, and transfer what they learned.

That means you can see the thinking behind the response—not just the response itself.
